It's rare that I write in my journal, but I think it's time to speak on something that's been on my mind for awhile now...
The deviants that I seem to admire the most here, and let me include those other artists who are outside of the community, are some of the most hard working, dedicated individuals that I've ever seen. They show that to put into this reality a piece of artwork that from my view, took a lot of work, and more importantly the love of doing it in the first place, is a constant state of amazement to me. But then I look at those artists that work in the commercial art realm, particularly the fields of movie and comics, and something that some would give their drawing arm to do. The so-called professionals of those fields have taken the idea of creating a completed page of work before a deadline to such a level of atrocity that I question if these people should even be paid to not just do the work, but to also be in the Industry at all.
A balanced, solid work ethic is not a bad thing at all, it is a trait that I believe is imperative to any person who chooses to be successful. A balanced work ethic in the commercial art field is also something that helps the individual to hone their craft, by just the simple practice of DOING the work. But I have read and heard artists say that this very skill retards and even hinders a artist from doing their best work! The reasoning being that a artist has the right to take as much time to develop their work to the best that it can be. Now, If you are working on your own Magus Opus that's fine, but when the artist is being paid to use their talents towards a piece of work that must be due by a certain amount of time, then I believe it's on that artist to plan accordingly, and provide a piece of work that is both turned in on time and is the best that they can do at the same time. In a lot of creative fields though, the procrastinating philosophy of wait til it's done is taking root, and the person that these pieces of work are supposed to reach are just getting not the best of an artist, but only the mediocre.
In my opinion, a strong work ethic goes hand in hand with the artistic skill that both can only be achieved through active action that is consistent. Any excuse that does not meet that, is just a justification of choosing to procrastinate.

By the way, I hope that you've played more than the demo of RE5. That game is absolutely amazing, 'specially the graphics.

As for discipling yourself, I completely understand. Though I must admit that it's a hard thing to do. XD
